Retinal Photography

Print this page

Retinal Photography is used throughout the diagnosis and treatment of many diseases of the retina. The term encompasses a number of types of diagnostic equipment that all use high resolution digital photography to capture detailed images of the eye.

With the use of special lenses and advanced image sensors, diagnostic machines such as Retinal Topographers, Fluorescein Angiograms, and Fundus Cameras are able to look through the cornea to capture images of the back of the eye that are used by the doctor to diagnose and track eye conditions. Computer software is used to analyze these digital images to improve their contrast, automatically highlight areas of possible interest, and generate montages of various images to show multiple photos, and images over time.

Retinal Photography is an invaluable tool for doctors in the discovery of possible problems, and the tracking of treatment of diseases of the retina.
